TODAY - Doug Jones bringing veteran-focused town hall to Anniston

The gubernatorial candidate plans to discuss benefits, health care and post-service opportunities with veterans, military families and community members.

On Tuesday, September 8, gubernatorial candidate Doug Jones will bring his statewide town hall series to the Anniston City Meeting Center for a discussion focused on Alabama’s veterans, service members and military families.

Jones said honoring veterans takes more than thanking them for their service. It requires keeping the promises made to the men and women who served the country, his campaign said in a news release.

“When someone raises their hand and puts on the uniform, we make a promise to them and their family,” Jones said. “That promise doesn’t end when their service does. Honoring veterans means keeping our promise to them by making sure veterans and military families have the health care they need, the benefits they earned, and the opportunities to build a career after service.”

Jones said he chose Anniston because of the area’s strong veteran community and deep military roots, including Fort McClellan and the Anniston Army Depot.

As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Jones led the bipartisan repeal of the Military Widow’s Tax, restoring full benefits to thousands of surviving military spouses. He also worked to expand veterans’ access to mental health care and pushed for greater accountability within the Department of Veterans Affairs, according to the release.

“I want to hear directly from Alabama veterans and military families about how this country and this state can better fulfill our promise to you,” Jones said. “I worked across the aisle to deliver for veterans in the Senate. I’ll do the same as your governor.”

While the discussion will focus on issues affecting veterans, service members and military families, the campaign said all community members are encouraged to attend and ask questions.

The town hall will begin at 5:30 p.m. Central Time and is open to “Democrats, Republicans and everyone in between,” according to the campaign.
