The Calhoun County Democratic Committee is excited to have Democratic candidate for PSC John Northrop speak at the September 18th meeting! We ALL get a power bill, but so many of us know very little about the process and the workings of the Alabama Public Service Commission. We get little information on how the PSC works - but know the price of the service continues to rise. This is an extremely powerful office and we need to give this election our attention and support.

John Northrop is former Birmingham Group Leader for Citizens’ Climate Lobby/Citizens’ Climate Education (CCL/CCE). CCL/CCE is an international, non-profit, non-partisan, 99 percent volunteer organization devoted to climate education, advocacy, and action. He is a former journalist, first as a photographer and reporter for the Birmingham News, later as Environment and City Hall reporter for the Birmingham Post-Herald; he also has been a writer-photographer-editor for the Birmingham Reporter (an early 1970s Southside weekly) and the Samoa News of Pago Pago, American Samoa.
John’s second career was public education. He served as a school system executive in Arizona, California, Georgia, and in the Kentucky Department of Education. His happiest posting was his last: 14 years as executive director of the Alabama School of Fine Arts, where he retired in 2011. He and his wife Ericka live in Vestavia Hills near Birmingham.
He is a graduate of Andalusia High School, Birmingham-Southern College, and the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
